Asymptomatic Bacteriuria (ASB), Renal Function and Hypertension

چکیده
Chronic kidney disease is an increasing public health problem. In the United States, the prevalence is estimated to be approximately 11% of the adult population. Chronic kidney disease may progress to end-stage renal failure, a condition associated with high morbidity and mortality. Diabetes mellitus (DM) is one of the main causes of kidney disease and endstage renal failure. In the United States, DM is the primary diagnosis in 44% of all new cases of renal replacement therapy. Vascular complications are the most common cause of diabetic nephropathy, but it is possible that urinary tract infections (UTIs) also contribute to renal insufficiency in patients with DM.

متن کاملConsequences of asymptomatic bacteriuria in women with diabetes mellitus.
BACKGROUND Women with diabetes mellitus (DM) have asymptomatic bacteriuria (ASB) more often than women without DM. It is unknown, however, what the consequences of ASB are in these women. OBJECTIVE To compare women with DM with and without ASB for the development of symptomatic urinary tract infections (UTIs), renal function, and secondary complications of DM during an 18-month follow-up peri...
متن کاملFrequency, risk factors, and responsible pathogenic microorganisms of asymptomatic bacteriuria in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Urinary tract infection is a serious problem in diabetic patients, and asymptomatic bacteriuria (ASB) in these patients is a risk factor for pyelonephritis and renal dysfunction. In the present study, we investigated the relationships between age, body mass index, duration of diabetes, HbA1c level, glucosuria, glomerular filtration rate and microalbuminuria in type 2 diabetic patients with ASB....
متن کاملAsymptomatic bacteriuria--clinical significance and management.
The clinical significance and management of asymptomatic bacteriuria (ASB) differs according to different groups of patients. ASB requires antibiotic treatment in pregnant women, children aged 5-6 years and prior to invasive genitourinary procedures. However, there is a consensus that ASB in the elderly, healthy school girls and young women, diabetic women and patients with indwelling catheters...

BACKGROUND asymptomatic bacteriuria (ASB) is common among the institutionalised elderly (IE). The cytokine levels and factors associated with ASB are unknown. OBJECTIVE to analyse cytokines and factors associated with ASB among the IE living in long-term care facilities (LTCFs) in Taiwan. METHODS this case-control study included residents ≥65 years in two LTCFs. The demographics, functional...
